GOLD CUP POSSIBLES Saturday’s Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby has all the makings of a real thriller with so many Cheltenham Gold Cup candidates in the line up. Grey Abbey, currently the highest-rated staying chaser in Britain will no doubt be attempting to make all the running and a repetition of his performance in last year’s race will make him very hard to beat. Keen Leader, who finished fifth on his reappearance over hurdles at Chepstow will have his followers and last year’s Grand National runner-up Royal Auclair from Paul Nicholls’ in form stable is sure to be involved in the finish. Kingscliff will be trying to establish his reputation after finishing tailed off behind Kicking King at Punchestown in April after a fantastic second to the same horse in the Kempton’s King George VI Chase. In receipt of 10lbs from Grey Abbey he could be a real threat if he is over all the training problems that he has suffered– having run only three times since the start of 2004. However the one they all have to beat is OLLIE MAGERN who won five races last season including the Grade 1 Feltham Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day and the Towton Novices’ Chase at Wetherby in February when he defeated subsequent Cheltenham Festival winner King Harald. He also ran good races in defeat including a fine second to Celestial Gold in the Hennessy at Newbury. A leg injury ruled out a shot at the Gold Cup but he is reportedly in good shape and his trainer Nigel Twiston Davies is enjoying a purple patch at present. OLLIE MAGERN’s ultimate target is the Blue Riband of chasing and the seven-year-old can take a step in the right direction by winning on Saturday. Currently a 25-1 chance with VC Bet for the Cheltenham Gold Cup that price will shorten if he wins this week-end. VC Bet’s Neal Wilkins commented “Saturday’s Charlie Hall Chase has all the makings of a terrific trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and should provide some valuable clues for some of the other important races in the coming months”.
