12.55 – Freeze The Flame 2pts e/w
Trainer Charlie Egerton teams up again with the champion jockey Tony McCoy after
the two landed the 2.30 here on the opening day. Their runner Freeze The Frame
has already won over course and distance and has been improving ever since his
opening third over the sticks at Bangor. Of the rest Cheveley Flyer might give
the selection most to do with Timmy Murphy in the saddle.

1.30 – Denman 3pts win
Not the most imaginative of selections but the current Sun Alliance Chase
favourite Denman can further back up his claims for that festival race with a
smooth victory here. On the whole he jumped well on his first outing over the
bigger obstacles beating the 2005 Triumph hurdle winner Penzance by 10 lengths
and providing he jumps these harder fences as well he can land this and then
shorten up by another point or two in the Sun Alliance betting.

2.05 – Eleazar 3pts e/w
A tricky contest in the third race at Cheltenham, but with there being over 16
runners the bookmakers will pay at least ¼ the odds a place for the first four
home. This at gives us punters a bit of scope and to me the interesting runner
is Lucy Wadham’s Eleazar. Brought over from Germany last year this horse was a
fair performer on the level over there and since going jumping has not finished
out of the top four in his five starts to date. So with Richard Johnson also an
eye-catching booking he looks a cracking each-way shot in a competitive event.

2.40 (Paddy Power Gold Cup) – Tamarinbleu 2pts win
Tamarinbleu could really get trainer David Pipe’s season off to a flyer and land
the Paddy Power Gold Cup and continue the fantastic record in the race his
father had. All eyes will be on the other Pipe runner Vodka Bleu after the
traditional gamble it this midweek, but my selection might just slip under the
radar and go well at a decent price.
He’s gone well fresh in the past when coming second at this meeting last year to
Accordian Etoile so will surely be ready to do himself justice. He ended last
season with an easy win at Ludlow and then came ninth in the Arkle over 2 miles
and can give jockey Tom Scudamore his biggest winner of his career.
Of the rest a lot of interest will surround the well fancied Nicholls runner
Taranis, but I just feel he has it to prove in this company and is worth taking
on. He has a lot of weight to shoulder round and being not the biggest animal
that might just take its toll in the later stages.

3.10 – Karanja 2pts e/w
Another tough handicap, but like I said before with the top four places up for
grabs then at least that gives us a better chance of retuning a profit. The one
I like is Victor Dartnall’s entry Karanja, he ran well for a long way in the
Brit Insurance Novices’ here at the festival behind Black Jack Ketchum and will
certainly not have anything in that league to contend with here.

3.45 – Idle Talk 5pts e/w
My main fancy of the day Idle Talk can land the 3.45 for jockey Jason Maguire
and trainer Tom George. He had a cracking season last year coming second in the
Sun Alliance Chase at the festival, and then followed that up with a fine fourth
in the Scottish National. He looks sure to get the good ground that suits him
and looks to be a horse to follow this season, possibly going on to target the
Welsh National over the Christmas period.
